Why Liver is an Essential Organ: Part 2

In part 1 we talked about how our liver is responsible for various functions and how it can be ruined due to unhealthy habits. Talking from Ayurvedic perspective, liver is associated with Pitta Dosha (Pitta governs all heat and metabolism in our mind and body. Pitta governs the important digestive “agnis” or fires of the body) which means if our liver is not working properly we can experience burning, acidity, swelling and infection. Liver recognizes toxins by their heating nature (like oily and fried foods), so if we want a proper cleansing of liver, we must remove these toxins and maintain a proper Pitta balance.

Detoxification of Liver

  • Turmeric is very effecting when it comes to detoxing our liver. It encourages the regeneration of liver cells and it’s antiseptic. You can use in in making a detox drink- Boil one cup of water and add a pinch of turmeric in it. Let it cool and then add one teaspoon of honey, squeeze a lemon into it and drink this tea thrice a day for good results. The high vitamin in lemon activates detoxifying enzymes. All the ingredients in this tea have anti-septic and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Garlic boosts the production of vital enzymes which play essential role in detoxifying blood, so try to use it daily in your food to reduce the inflammation in liver.
  • Green and leafy vegetables like lettuce, broccoli or kale helps in building your mechanism against liver problems.
  • AVOID oil, salt, hot spices, fermented food (alcohol and vinegar), tomatoes, egg yolks, coffee, red meat, refined flour and sugar as much as you can. Eat them in fewer quantities as excess of everything is bad anyway.
  • A diet which is rich in fiber keeps the bowels, liver and blood clean by facilitating elimination. Drink lots of water every day.
  • Give your liver a break. Fasting once a week is healthy because it helps our liver to adjust and relax for a while. While fasting, eat fruits or drink fresh juice all day to restore full functionality of liver.
